Bringing Baseball to the Hebrew Home at Riverdale Through The Magic of Scent

Close your eyes and imagine the last baseball game you attended.  The smells of popcorn, peanuts, beer and grass take you back to that warm summer day, watching the home team play their heart out.  Many of the residents of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, a non-profit nursing home in the Bronx, are Bronx born and raised – and diehard Yankees fans yet haven't been to Yankee Stadium in decades.

Through a new exhibition opening on March 19, they will soon be virtually transported back to the days of DiMaggio and Berra via a unique sensory experience.

The Hebrew Home is installing six baseball inspired scents in its "Yankees Dugout” exhibit, including beer, grass, popcorn and hot dogs, thanks to a new partnership with International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) and Scent Marketing.

“Research tells us that scent and memory are intimately linked because smells and experiences are closely connected,” said David V. Pomeranz, Chief Operating Officer of RiverSpring Health, the Hebrew Home’s parent organization.  “We are grateful to the IFF team for bringing the excitement of baseball to life in this engaging way.”

“We are in the business of discovering new and more meaningful ways to touch and inspire people.,” said Andreas Fibig, CEO and Chairman of IFF. “ What the Yankee Dugout exhibit proves is that, in a very real way, scent has the power to help stir memories and the emotions they bring – bridging an otherwise impossible gap for the residents.  I am proud to see that our expertise in scent can have such a positive impact on the well-being of people.”

The idea behind these scents is that with a push of a button, nursing home residents can experience Yankee Stadium in a whole new way.

The Home will incorporate these smells therapeutically – engaging residents in programming and activities at the Yankees Dugout that incorporates the scents of baseball — From poetry groups to art expression.
