October 6, 2005, New York, N.Y.,...International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. (IFF) today announced its involvement in “Flavorologist for a Day,” a special event sponsored by Nestlé Ice Cream, part of the Dreyer's/Edy's Grand Ice Cream family of brands. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the frozen pop, Nestlé Ice Cream invited kids nationwide, aged six to twelve, to dream up the world's coolest frozen pop flavor. Working closely with Nestlé Ice Cream, IFF's in-house team of flavorologists will create the formulas for the 10 winning flavors. The flavorologists are also developing eight wacky flavors of their own—like Cheeseburger and Ginger Bread Man—for the contest winners to sample when they visit the top secret flavor lab at the Nestlé Ice Cream factory on October 21st.

“We wanted to work with IFF specifically because of the great work they do in consumer insight, especially their Eye On Kids™ program,” said Darcy Horn, Associate Marketing Manager for Nestlé Kids Frozen Snacks. “They know kids better than anyone in the industry and their understanding of the way kids think made them natural partners for this cool contest.” IFF's Eye On Kids is a program that connects in-house, specialized kids sensory research and consumer insights with kids market trends in every region of the world, making it a powerful resource for its internal and external customers.

IFF flavorologists Martin Ongteco, Hedy Kulka, and Jen Neske were charged with developing the eight wacky flavors for the tour. “It was a real treat to let our imaginations run wild and think like kids for a while. My favorite creation was Green Pickle, which worked surprisingly well since pickles have a sweet side to begin with” said Ongteco. Creating the formulas for the winning entries will prove a different challenge for flavorologist Jen Neske. “It's astounding to see flavor possibilities through the eyes of kids. While the gross-out factor is there, pure imagination plays the starring role.” What is Neske's favorite entry so far? “While I loved them all, I'd have to say that PB&J was the most compelling. I want to make that frozen pop remind us all of our favorite sandwich growing up!”
